Apache Institute

The Apache Institute

The Apache Institute is an academic extension of San Carlos Apache College that provides oversight, guidance, and integration of Apache culture and traditions using the A.R.R.O.W. model.

About the Apache Institute

The Apache Institute at San Carlos Apache College (SCAC) is an academic extension that provides oversight, guidance, and integration of Apache culture and traditions within the college’s educational framework through the A.R.R.O.W. initiative. It is directed by SCAC’s Tia Early, with guidance from historian Dr. Marcus Macktima, who teaches at both SCAC and NAU.

The Apache Institute continues to strengthen the connection between education and Apache identity by fostering cultural preservation and community engagement. Through its ongoing initiatives, the Apache Institute is dedicated to empowering future generations to honor their heritage while pursuing academic and personal excellence.

Using Indigenous Ways of Knowing in research design for all Apache Institute projects is culturally appropriate and ethically imperative. A compelling argument for this approach lies in its potential to foster more accurate, respectful, and impactful research outcomes. This approach is not just an option; it is a responsibility to conduct research that is ethical, equitable, and trans-formative.

The Cultural Advisory Board

The Apache Institute’s Cultural Advisory Council is a group of community members and cultural leaders who provide guidance on preserving, promoting, and integrating cultural values within programs, projects, or institutions. Having the input from community members and elders ensures that decisions are made with cultural sensitivity and respect for traditions, language, and heritage.

The Cultural Advisory Council serves as a bridge between the community and organizations, offering insight on culturally appropriate practices and initiatives. Its goal is to strengthen cultural identity, foster inclusion, and support collaboration rooted in mutual understanding.

Community Engagement

The Apache Institute actively engages with the local community. All events are open to the community and are used to continue to teach our youth about Apache culture and language. These events highlight our dedication to preserving traditions, sharing knowledge, and strengthening community connections. Everyone is invited to join future celebrations and learn more about the rich heritage of the San Carlos Apache people.

Community Resources

The Apache Institute is actively giving back to the community by creating resources that will support projects and daily activities. All community resources are intended to help students and community members take part in and preserve the Apache culture and language. As community resources are developed, they will be added to the Apache Institute Resource page, where they are easily accessible to community members.
