Shirley M. Boni is an enrolled member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe and resides in the Peridot District. She was born and raised on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. She is currently employed with the San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation and serves as the Director of Clarence Wesley Health Center located in Bylas, AZ. She has a Bachelor’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix. She has more than 38 years of work experience in healthcare management and leadership.
From 1980 to 1997, Shirley was employed with the Sells Indian Hospital, Indian Health Service on the Tohono O’Odham Nation. She served as a Budget Analyst for the Tucson Area Office, Financial Management; Chief of Coordinated Care overseeing the functions of the Patient Business Office, Patient Registration, Benefits Coordination, Utilization Review, Purchase Referred Care, Health Information Management, Third Party Billing and Coding; and Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer for a 36 inpatient bed hospital. Shirley was very involved in beta-testing and alpha-testing some of the Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) software (Referred Care Information System, Third Party Billing package and Coding package) before they were released for implementation to all of Indian Health Service facilities and 638 Tribal facilities across the U.S.
In January 1997, Shirley transferred home to the San Carlos Indian Hospital, Indian Health Service where she served as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer overseeing the functions of the Financial Management, Human Resources, Patient Business Office, Patient Registration, Benefits Coordination, Purchase Referred Care, Health Information Management, Third Party Billing and Coding, Supply Chain, Security Officers, Facilities Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Information Technology.
In July 2015, Shirley transitioned over to the San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation, Izee’ Baa Gowah. She served as the Director of Community Relations and was responsible for beginning the weekly KYAY radio show where she translated various health related topics from English into Apache language. In March 2017, Shirley became the Director of Clarence Wesley Health Center.
During Shirley’s many years of service, she has been through many successful hospital surveys for accreditation from the Joint Commission.
In January 2021, the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council appointed Shirley as a member of the San Carlos Apache College Board of Regents. Shirley is very humbled and honored to serve as a member of the San Carlos Apache College Board of Regents. Shirley brings a wealth of experience in the healthcare field and wants to contribute her knowledge and skills to improve the quality of higher education our students deserve.
